About the Photographer
Raised in South East England, Ray has always been interested in creativity, constantly developing skills and techniques to express his experiences. Ray studied for his NDD in fine arts at Epsom College of Art in Surrey where he developed his sense of design, lighting, composition and drama.
After Epsom he moved to central London and took up a post with Unilever’s advertising agency Lintas, later switching to magazine work at Odhams Press before returning to advertising and eventually going independent as a photographer, creative art director, illustrator and musician freelancing for various top institutions including the London Press Exchange, Grays, Condé Naste, Benn, Marquee, Maxwell and numerous independent studios and agencies, whilst at other times helping out, running or co-running other studios in Covent Garden (mostly agency stuff), Knightsbridge (mostly album covers), Earls Court (mostly fashion and glamour) and Richmond (mostly catalogue work).
When wife and child came about Ray returned to live in Epsom and now runs his own photographic studio/workshop utilising all the expertise and experience acquired in his previous posts - without the London overheads! Ray, with his wife Monica, turn round a considerable amount of work to a very high standard. Shooting most formats from 5”x 4” down to 35mm, mostly digital which can be expertly tweaked and finished on their Apple Macs so as to produce images second to none. With his art college training and extensive commercial studio experience Ray is able to take the creative side of advertising and catalogue projects right through from the ‘rough’ beginning to the final ‘press’ stage. Photographing, retouching, designing, typesetting through to the organisation of the the final print, or, simply producing just one of the progressive stages.
Ray is currently Art Director of ‘Squash Player Magazine' and is a regular contributor to the RAC Club magazine ‘Pell-Mell’. He has a list of local (and not so local) firms who regularly return for corporate portraits, events, product shots, fashion shoots etc., and is also popular as a domestic portrait and wedding photographer and keeps a folio of models, actors and dancers on file for potential future assignments. His small but efficient studio is equipped with various full length seamless backgrounds and an array of powerful strobe lights. Away from the studio excellent location work is also produced with or without supplementary lighting.
